Prof. Kosei Hasegawa

Dr. Kosei Hasegawa has been working as a gynecologic oncologist for over 20 years and is currently the Director and Professor of Gynecologic Oncology at Saitama Medical University, which hosts one of the largest comprehensive cancer centers in Japan. Dr. Hasegawa and his team treat more than 350 newly diagnosed gynecologic cancer patients each year. He is actively involved in clinical research, serving as the site principal investigator (PI) for over 30 clinical trials. Currently, he is leading a phase I and a phase II investigator-initiated trial (IIT) for cervical cancer, one IIT for endometrial cancer, and four IITs for ovarian cancer as the coordinating PI.

Since establishing his own laboratory at Saitama Medical University in 2008, his research has focused on translational medicine. Using samples collected from patients enrolled in clinical trials, he investigates the biology of ovarian and cervical cancers, aiming to identify biomarkers and therapeutic targets. Another key area of his work involves testing candidate anti-cancer drugs in patient-derived cells (PDCs) and xenografts (PDXs); he has established more than 40 3D-PDC and 33 PDX models to date.

Dr. Hasegawa received his M.D. from Okayama University, completed his residency at Okayama University Hospital, and pursued a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at the Saitama Medical University International Medical Center. He also received postdoctoral training at the Mayo Clinic (under Dr. Kah Whye Peng) and the University of Pennsylvania (under Dr. George Coukos). He has authored over 200 publications in the fields of oncology, immunology, and virology.
